ESSHU News

ESSHU is planning to invite a guest speaker to an event that will involve all Ethiopian students and faculty. At our meeting of November 08, it was decided to invite an individual who participated in the recent HIV/AIDS conference in Ethiopia, sponsored by Harvard University. However, that person has a tight schedule and will not be able to make it. Therefore, we are open to suggestions on who we should invite as a guest speaker. Please e-mail me with your suggestions as [email protected]. The speaker has to be an expert in some Ethiopia related issue.

As of Ocotober 1999, ESSHU has been recognized as an official student organization at Howard University.  ESSHU submitted its constitution in May of 1999 which has been reviewed and approved by the Office of Student Activities.  Ethiopian students have been part of the Howard family for decades however, this is the first time an Ethiopian organization has been recognized by the University.

ESSHU submitted its annual budget for academic year 1999/2000 on October 19, 1999.  The budget outlined all anticipated expenses for the organization's activities with a detailed explanation of each and every event.  The Howard University Student Association (HUSA) will be allocating funds requested by mid November.  A copy of the budget may be received from one of the officials or at the next meeting.

ESSHU's academic workshop conducted on July 24, 1999 in the School of Business was a great success.  Information was made available on vocational schools, undergraduate colleges, finaicail aid, gratuate studies, and various standarized tests.  The workshop was designed to benefit the Ethiopian community within the Metropolitan Washington, DC area.  There was a good turn out by the community and participants commended the efforts of ESSHU to provide academic guidance.
